From songfics to Spotify playlists, it's clear that music is a big part of the book community- it's definitely common to see your online friend crying to a playlist that they made for a fictional ship. In today's post, I'm going to recommend you a book I love based on a music album that I also love. Let's start! ~ Picture Us In The Light by Kelly Loy Gilbert: Kid Krow by Conan Gray Add it on Goodreads here: Kid Krow could honestly relate to a ton of my favorite books, but for the sake of this post, I'm recommending Picture Us In The Light (which is an absolutely amazing book that deserves more hype!). A lot of the songs on Kid Krow definitely have nostalgic and bittersweet vibes, similar to the storylines in Picture Us In The Light, which focus a lot on both family and friendships, and how they change. In particular, the song The Story really exemplifies the themes of the novel, with its lyrics "But I think that it could work for you and me/ Just wait and see/ It's not the end of the story." As the heirs to rival gangs of Shanghai, Juliette Cai and Roma Montagov certainly have big reputations. The Reputation album captures their back-and-forth enemies-to-lovers dynamic perfectly, as well the whole blood feud between the Scarlet Gang and White Flowers. The song from this album that I think suits Juliette and Roma the most, however, has to be Dancing with Our Hands Tied- "I, I loved you in spite of/ Deep fears that the world would divide us" is definitely the anthem for their forbidden romance. ~ The Wicker King by K. Ancrum: folklore by Taylor Swift Add it on Goodreads here: Yes, it's another Taylor Swift album! You probably wouldn't think of folklore when you first hear that The Wicker King is a dark and heart-wrenching psychological thriller (literally- the pages get darker as the book continues to show the character's worsening mental states), but a lot of its songs actually suit the book. seven reflects a younger August and Jack's childhood friendship- specifically, with the verse "And I've been meaning to tell you/ I think your house is haunted/ Your dad is always mad and that must be why/ And I think you should come live with/ Me and we can be pirates/ Then you won't have to cry/ Or hide in the closet/ And just like a folk song/ Our love will be passed on." ~ The Girls I've Been by Tess Sharpe: Manic by Halsey Add it on Goodreads here: The Girls I've Been follows Nora O'Malley, the daughter of a con artist, as she and her ex-boyfriend and current girlfriend are caught in the midst of a bank robbery. The novel is a excellent twisty thriller, and it has strong themes of survival and recovery- similar to Manic. In clementine, one of the lyrics is "And in my world, the people on the street don't know my name", which mirrors the many names and identities that Nora had had to take on as her con artist mothers' protégé, losing herself in the process. It Goes Like This is about the four former members of Moonlight Overthrow, a queer pop band, who have to come together for a final show in their hometown. Sour fits the novel perfectly (and the covers even look amazing together!), covering Gina and Celeste's, two of the members, heartbreak over their past breakup, the lost friendship between the four, and the character's struggles to find their paths, both in the music industry and outside of it. brutal is the song that's the most similar to this, with the lyrics "I only have two real friends/ And lately, I'm a nervous wreck/ 'Cause I love people I don't like/ And I hate every song I write". Don't worry, though- the characters end up happier then those lyrics by the end. Are any of these books or albums your favorite? Let me know in the comments!
